Bachelor at Her Bidding (Montana Born Bachelor Auction #2) by Kate Hardy

Book Blurb:

Your date with Parisian-trained chef Ryan Henderson promises you’ll get the best meal of your life cooked especially for you. His Red Velvet cheesecake is to die for – but we know he has even better desserts up his sleeve…

How to win a girl in ten cakes…

When Dr. Rachel Cassidy comes back to Marietta with a broken heart and a divorce under her belt, going to a Bachelor Auction fund-raiser doesn’t sound like her idea of a good time – and when her sister and friends “buy” her a dinner date with sexy Parisian-trained pastry chefRyan Henderson, that sounds even worse.

Ryan doesn’t have time for dating – he’s put his dreams to one side and come back to Marietta to look after his sick grandmother. But when he agrees to help a charity fundraiser by offering to cook a special meal to one lucky bidder, he gets more than he bargains for and discovers a woman he might just dare to let himself fall in love with.

Then tragedy strikes, just when Rachel and Ryan think they might have a future, opening up old scars and pushing them apart.

And if they’re to stand a chance of getting back together, then Ryan’s going to have to be seriously inventive. Can he win the love of his life with ten cakes?

My Review:

Bachelor at Her Bidding is the second book in the Montana Born Bachelor series.  I like how it can be read alone but at the same time is happening simultaneously with what happened in book 1 - starting with the bachelor auction.

In Bachelor at Her Bidding, Rachel and Ryan have both been hurt before.  This hurt continues to taint their lives, and neither of them is interested in any kind of relationship.  But Rachel's 'date' with Ryan prove she's not dead inside and their is an instant chemistry between them.  Very hot chemistry!  They slowly get to know each other, but try to keep their 'no strings' relationship secret - which won't last for long in a small town!  There is a lot of inner conflict in the main characters, and soon a crisis pushes them both into conflict with each other.  A conflict that they may not get over.

Rachel does not have a lot of self confidence.  She is smart, caring, and has a great network of friends and family.  She was difficult for me to really feel for though because she kept so much to herself, and let one man, her ex husband, still have way too much power over her emotions.  When conflict does arise, she is quick to react and put up her walls...and it's all up to Ryan to win her back.

Ryan has a lot going on in his life, lots of stressors too.  He's been hurt and has put it all aside to care for his grandmother...however it still affects him and he too is quick to react to the conflict between him and Rachel.  His way of apologizing and trying to win her back when he realizes what has happened is really unique and sweet!!  Ryan was easier for me to feel for, but both of their characters show positive signs of maturing!

Well paced with good flow, this novella was long enough for the story being told.  Bachelor at Her Bidding fits in well with the series, and the secondary characters in this add a lot of fun and strength to the story.  I liked the believable way Kate wrote of real issues.

I'd recommend Bachelor at Her Bidding to romance readers looking for a quick, smooth romantic read.
