Excerpt
As
the hours fly by, I drive closer to my doom. I begin to notice a weight in my
body as if I’m being pulled towards my fate. My throat starts to constrict and
it’s becoming hard to breath, I’m struggling for each ragged breath. Sweat
beings to appear on my forehead and I have to pull over and loosen my tie. What
the hell is wrong with me? My palms are sweating, and my heart races with loud,
strong beats. The road in front of me becomes blurry, making it hard to keep my
eyes open. What’s…going on with me?
Picking
up my cell, I fumble with the phone until I find Doc’s number and click on it.
She answers on the second ring. Forcing the words out of me…“Doc, something’s
wrong with me. I…didn’t know who else to call. Please help me.”
“Where
are you?”
Breathless,
I answer, “I’m on the side of the road about four hours into my trip.” It’s
becoming very difficult to answer her. I feel like I’m going to pass out.
“What
trip? Where are you going?”
I
grip my chest, trying to stop the pain. “You told me to look her up.”
“What
are you talking about?”
Slightly
frustrated at this point I force the words out. “My mother’s friend.”
“Oh. I didn’t mean you had to
visit her just yet. Can you try to explain what’s going on?”
I
describe my symptoms, and she explains that it’s just a panic attack. That
everything is going to be fine. The trip has brought back so many memories. She
tells me to close my eyes and find my happy place. So I do as instructed, and I
find Anaya’s beautiful face. “Now take some long, slow breaths and tell me what
you see.”
“Anaya
and her golden brown eyes. Her beautiful chocolate brown hair. That sassy smirk
on her face as she gazes helplessly in my eyes.”
“Perfect.
What are you feeling now?”
“Peace.”
“Good,
now how about your other symptoms?”
“I’m
starting to cool down and my breathing is returning to normal. My chest is
loosening up too.”
“That’s
great. You had your first panic attack. It’s probably brought on by the fact
that you’re pushing yourself too fast. You needed time to warm up to the idea
of going back home. But now that you’ve set yourself on this path, you need to
face it. How long until you’re home?”
I shudder at the word home. “I
should be there in about six hours or so.”

We have continued to stick together over the years and we are always there for

Review: Make You Burn (Deacons of Bourbon Street #1) by @megancrane

Book Blurb:

Meet the Deacons of Bourbon Street, bad boy bikers who are hell on wheels—and heaven between the sheets. Megan Crane revs up an irresistible new series co-written with Rachael Johns, Jackie Ashenden, and Maisey Yates.

Sean “Ajax” Harding’s oaths are inked into his skin. Once second-in-command of the Deacons of Bourbon Street motorcycle club, he left New Orleans to protect the brotherhood, and only the death of his beloved mentor, Priest Lombard, could lure him back. Walking into the old hangout gives him a familiar thrill—especially when he gets an eyeful of the bar’s delectable new owner. A wild ride with her is just the welcome Ajax needs. Then he realizes that she’s Priest’s daughter, all grown up and totally off limits.

Sophie Lombard loved her father, not his lifestyle. She’s done with bikers . . . until Ajax roars into town—arrogant, tough, and sexy as ever. And although he treats her like the Catholic schoolgirl he once knew, Sophie’s daydreams tend to revolve around sin. With the very real possibility of heartbreak looming, Sophie knows better than to get too close to an outlaw. But every touch from Ajax is steamier than the Louisiana bayou—and heat like this may just be worth getting burned.

My Review:

Make You Burn is intense, raw, and sexually passionate.   I have been really looking forward to this series, and Megan Crane did not disappoint me!  Make You Burn is a hot and intriguing start to Deacons of Bourbon Street.

Prepare to dive in and meet gritty, questionable but honorable characters.  These characters are not sweet, average citizens.  They boldly jumped off the pages at me and dared me to love them!

Sophie strong, independent and not at all afraid to stand up to a big MC man...especially one she's no stranger to.  Although Sophie wasn't part of her father's MC club and the lifestyle, she was in the periphery and soaked up a lot more than anyone probably wanted her to.  She knows the rules, she knows the codes, she knows the strength of the brotherhood above all else...even above her.  Ten years after being sent away by Sophie's father Priest, Ajax and his brothers in arms are back.  To honor a man who deserves no less in their eyes, a man who was there for them and held them together.  Sophie has always been off limits, but Sophie's limits have been reached and she's ready to take what she wants.  The intense, complex emotions that run between these two were really captivating.  I just really liked who they were.  There was no pretense, really nothing holding them back.  As much as Ajax pulls to Sophie though, the lifestyle of being part of a MC club isn't what she thinks she wants...even if it's all she's ever known.  They are like oil and vinegar at times, and at other times you know they are meant to be.  A forbidden romance that's not as forbidden anymore...

I really liked these characters and how Megan introduced them to me, and led me through their present with pictures of their past.  The feelings Sophie and Ajax have are so real they could scorch the pages!  How they deal with these feelings is unique, but it is how these characters are and it really works for the plot.  The characters in Make You Burn appear rough, but who they are and their actions fit well with the plot and help push it forward.  I could feel their feelings, their struggles, both good and bad.  I could feel how the life style might not be one Sophie thinks she doesn't want...and I liked how in the space of a few days her character grows and starts to come to terms with what she really wants.  What's important to her.

There is a lot of explicit sex in Make You Burn, but it fits with the plot and who this hero and heroine are.  If it wasn't like that for them this wouldn't be Ajax and Sophie's story.

The setting of New Orleans is great for Make You Burn, and the history the characters talk about and the mystery surrounding the past and the present kept me hooked.  I felt touched by Sophie and Ajax, with their rough, deep feelings and what each was going through.  The unexpected twist to the plot that I'm sure will be carried over into the next Deacon's of Bourbon Street promises to be very interesting to follow.  There is absolutely no cliffhanger, I felt that Megan tied this book up well with space to go on.

I liked meeting the complex secondary characters and can't wait to find out their stories in the next book in this series!

Make You Burn is well paced, and Megan kept me on the edge of my seat with these powerful characters and what they are facing.

I'd highly recommend Make You Burn to any romance reader who likes MC books - which I admit are not usually my thing but I am so glad I picked this one up!  I will definitely be reading Fire Me Up!!

Review: Love Will Always Find You by Claire Matthews

Book Blurb:

She’s definitely his person of interest—but is he barking up the wrong tree?

When aspiring writer and dog trainer Evie Malone gets a call from a man seeking help with the dog he inherited, she’s eager to help—in no small way because his surly voice on the phone gives her good shivers.

Meeting Luke Kovacs confirms her attraction to the no-nonsense, socially challenged cop, but she’s got some unfinished business to take care of first. Business named Brad, an ex-to-be she’s been trying to let down gently.

Luke’s not really a dog person, but he’s willing to make an effort to settle in with his late aunt’s mutt. Especially with the help of a woman who makes him wish he had someone waiting for him at home.

When Evie goes to Brad’s place to break up, she’s shocked to find him dead on the floor. Worse, every time she turns around, she finds more and more evidence…and it’s clearly stacked against her. Though Luke believes her innocent, they soon find themselves in a race against time to prove it—before the real killer finds a way to silence her.

Warning: Contains a sexy Texas cop, a heroine who’d risk her life for an enchilada plate, and a string of adorable dogs. Oh, and Sea-Monkeys.

My Review:

Love Will Always Find You is a fun, entertaining read.  It was really great to lose myself in this romance!

I really liked Evie.  I liked how she said what was on her mind, she didn't hold back!  I liked that she was doing what she loved and was happy.  When Evie finds herself in a bizarre circumstance following the death of her soon to be ex fiancee, and help comes in the form of policeman Luke. The same Luke who has hired her to help him with his newly acquired dog.  The same Luke who Evie is very attracted to.  The attraction goes both ways, and through Love Will Always Find You their relationship develops at the same time as Luke tries to find a killer.  I really enjoyed the journey with these two - the feelings, the circumstances, the animals, and the mystery all worked well together to round out a very good book.

I really enjoyed the secondary characters too.  Each brought another dimension to the plot.

The plot is interesting and Claire kept me engrossed in Evie and Luke's story.  Luke draws a blurry line between personal and professional, but the way this was done really worked well in Love Will Always Find You.  The mystery of a killer on the loose and Evie's involvement spiced things up and Claire wrote enough twists into the plot to really keep me guessing.

With laughter and love interwoven well with some serious stuff, Love Will Always Find You is a book I'd recommend to any romance reader who likes a bit of mystery in the mix!

Review: Again, Alabama by Susan Sands

Book blurb:
Cammie Laroux is back in Alabama---again.

Dragged back to her small town to help her mother recover from surgery while rescuing the family event planning business should be a cinch. Even for a disgraced television chef, right? Wrong.

Among the many secrets Cammie's family’s been hiding is the fact that their historic home is falling down. Oh, and the man hired to restore the house, Grey Harrison, is the same high school and college love of her life who thrashed her heart and dreams ten years ago. Yeah, that guy.

Grey, a widower with a young daughter, has never stopped loving Cammie, and when they are face to face once again, the chemistry is off the charts. Cammie may be in full-blown denial, but letting go is no longer in Grey’s vocabulary, even when winning Cammie’s forgiveness and renovating their love may seem like an impossible build even for a master architect and carpenter.

As Cammie finds herself forgetting all the reasons she can’t trust Grey or love again, he finds himself remembering all the reasons he wants her to stay with him in Alabama… forever.

My Review:

Again, Alabama by Susan Sands is a second chance romance where the heroine (Cammie) finally comes home again. Coming home is not necessarily what Cammie wants to do, but her mother and family need her, and she is in a career crisis where some away time is a good plan. Cammie ran from her home town years ago, never wanting to return, but here she is. I had mixed feelings about Cammie. I understand the teenage hurt she suffered, but she has carried this heart ache around for years and used it as an excuse to stay away.

When she runs into the cause of her heart ache (Grey), she has some very mixed feelings. She is in a relationship with someone else, but a piece of her heart won't let Grey go no matter how much it still hurts to see him again. Grey knows he committed a terrible wrong all those years ago, and he wants nothing more now than forgiveness and a second chance with Cammie. But there is so much more going on in their adult lives now than there was all those years ago as teenagers. Grey has a daughter, Cammie has a fiancee, a family business to help with, and a family with secrets that are coming to light. Nothing is what Cammie expected.

It was an interesting journey to go on as Cammie worked through her family issues and her current relationship versus her feelings towards Grey. I liked getting to know Cammie and Grey as adults. With all the past and present baggage pulling them down, the road they must travel has a lot of ups and downs. There is tension not only between Cammie and Grey, but between Cammie and her family. There is conflict, both inner and interpersonal. I was very interested to keep reading and find out what kind of resolution there would be for this hero and heroine.

I liked the secondary characters and the family dynamics that were involved in Again, Alabama. I felt that they added a lot of dimension and depth to the plot. I liked Samantha (Grey's daughter) who adds even more special to the story and really pulled at my heart strings. This little girl and what she's suffering really put a lot into perspective.

Susan's writing was easy to read and the flow of Again, Alabama was smooth. For the most part the plot was well paced, but there were times where I just wanted to know more (usually background) information so that I could feel closer to the characters. Overall an enjoyable read, I'd recommend Again, Alabama to romance readers who like a second chance romance.

Review: To Love a Texas Cowboy (Wishing, Texas Book 1) by Julie Benson

Book Blurb:

New York artist Cassie Reynolds moves to Wishing, Texas to raise her orphaned niece, and discovers she’s in way over her head. Then she meets Ella’s financial guardian, Ty Barnett, a handsome hardworking rancher, with his own ideas on child rearing.

Ty and Cassie clash over almost everything, especially Ella, but when two people have the welfare of one child at heart, suddenly they find themselves looking at each other in a whole new light…

Will Ty make room for another lady in his life? And will Cassie allow herself to love a Texas cowboy?

My Review:

The plot and characters of To Love a Texas Cowboy really touched me. With humor, heart, and a lot of hope, Julie writes a tale about significant life changes, finding the positive, and finding the unexpected at the best time.

I really liked Ty and Cassie as the hero and heroine in To Love a Texas Cowboy. They are so different, and who knows if they'd even be in each other's worlds if not for the extraordinary circumstances they find themselves in. Cassie, Ella's Aunt, has significant changes in her life that she in no way can prepare for when she suddenly becomes guardian to orphaned Ella. I really felt for her, because I really felt like no one understood what she was going though. Not only was she suddenly guardian to a little girl as a single parent, she'd lost her sister, and had to up root her New York life to move to Wishing, Texas. I didn't feel like Cassie was given enough credit by those around her, and this really made me want to stand in her corner and praise her! Even her career has had to take another path...and Cassie handles it all the best she can, even if it is a huge struggle and stressor for her. Cassie came across to me as brave, strong, smart, and she tired hard, never giving up. Cassie's character went through tremendous growth in To Love a Texas Cowboy, and I liked going along with her on this journey.

Ty was a bit hard to like at first. He is Ella's financial guardian. He also comes across as very judgemental of Cassie. He is stubborn and serious, and his character goes through even more growth in To Love a Texas Cowboy. Ty and Cassie have no choice but to interact. The attraction to one another is something neither expects or really wants at this time in their lives. To me it felt like these characters really helped each other and unwittingly drew strength from one another. Whether they wanted to acknowledge it or not, they are good for each other.

Ella is a sweet child who pulls Ty and Cassie together...because she is the most important part of this story. Ella is the common denominator between Ty and Cassie. The unexpected, turbulent relationship that develops between them is realistic with the ups and downs they go through, and very intense. Can it last though?

I just really enjoyed this story. The complexities of Cassie, Ty and Ella's lives are ones that easy found their way into my heart and made me really feel for these characters and what all of them were going through.

Julie's smooth style and well paced writing made To Love a Texas Cowboy really pull at my heart and it was an easy to book to fall into and feel a part of. I'd recommend it to any romance reader!

Review: Heart of Danger (Ghost Ops #1) by Lisa Marie Rice

Book Blurb:

Ghost Ops. A small unit of super-elite soldiers so secret only two men know of their existence. Betrayed by their commanding officer while on an antiterrorist mission, the team is massacred. Only three survive—and find themselves framed and disgraced. But en route to the court martial, they escape . . . and disappear.

Beautiful, brilliant, and determined, Dr. Catherine Young is on a mission to find a man who has vanished into thin air. Walking into a high-tech hideaway bearing an essential message to Tom "Mac" McEnroe, Team Leader of the betrayed Ghost Ops force, is the most dangerous thing she has ever done. The soldier she encounters is frightening and suspicious, but her senses reveal the man underneath: tough, honorable, and so breathtakingly masculine Catherine feels weak in his presence . . . But to surrender to Mac's passionate desires would put her life in dire jeopardy. Catherine has a gift that enables her to see into the heart of others—and looking into Mac's is like staring into the very heart of danger itself.

My Review:

I have had Heart of Danger (and this whole Ghost Ops series) in my TBR pile for a while now, and am so glad I was finally able to delve into it! Heart of Danger by Lisa Marie Rice is a book that once I started I couldn't put down!

I loved the characters, the pace and the plot of Heart of Danger. I really liked that Catherine and Mac were both mature, strong characters. Their attraction to each other is intense and the development of a relationship is fast, but it is believable because fast happens in real life too! When you know you know! I liked the trust they developed and the honesty in their relationship. Despite all that they each have going on, the risks, the threats, the past and present dangers, there were no games or angst. I felt like these two were meant to be together, and their relationship fits well with the plot of Heart of Danger. I liked the secondary characters Nick and Jon who are part of Mac's team. The relationship between them is well written, and it was easy to see how close they were.

The suspenseful plot is riddled with intrigue, twists and turns, and the possibilities of the future! Lee is a strong, relevant part of this part of the plot. He is the evil to Mac and Catherine's good, and the balance of this works well with the plot. I liked that I could actually envisioning what is happening in this book happening in the future...it was scary and mesmerizing at the same time. I never really knew what was going to happen, and this made for an entrancing read.

The paranormal aspect of Heart of Danger is woven into the plot well and believably. I liked this part of the plot, the extra edge it gives the overall book is amazing!

A futuristic, romantic suspense with a paranormal twist, Heart of Danger had elements that filled my heart up, had me on edge, and had me thinking that all of this just might be possible in the future. I really liked how Lisa Marie Rice ends Heart of Danger - no cliffhanger, but an easy move into the next book in this series (I Dream of Danger). This is one book I couldn't put down and would highly recommend!!
